18TH ANNUAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Best Buddies enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through friendships and jobs
The Best Buddies chapter at Saint Cloud High School was presented with an Outstanding Chapter Award at Best Buddies International’s 18th Annual Student Leadership Conference. Saint Cloud High School was chosen as one of 22 outstanding high school chapters from 817 programs throughout the world for its dedication to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships. The award was presented by William Kennedy Shriver along with the current Miss Teen USA, Miss USA, and Miss Universe to the 2007-08 Chapter President Brittney Creech.
Best Buddies is a nonprofit organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. The Best Buddies Student Leadership Conference prepares student leaders to operate the Best Buddies chapter at their school, which involves recruitment of new members, planning group activities for their chapters and promoting of the social integration of people with intellectual disabilities in their communities.
The Saint Cloud Chapter includes over 100 members from the Early Childhood Education Program and the National Honor Society who are paired with students with intellectual disabilities for friendship and socialization. Chapter Advisers are Mrs. Donna Jahnke, Ms. Ruth Ellis, and Mrs. Denise Peeler. Activities include fundraisers such as car washes and working at the concession stand at Osceola Heritage Park. Buddies also get together for social activities including the Best Buddies Prom, football games, bowling, the movies, and school activities. The chapter service projects were to help sponsor the school Pasta for Pennies Drive and monthly visits to the Council on Aging.
